Andris Gauja

Andris has a practice which includes criminal law (particularly white collar crime) and commercial law (contract, equity, property law and corporations matters).

Andris has a keen forensic eye and particularly enjoys picking apart complex disputes involving financial transactions, be they corporate or criminal matters. Prior to joining the Bar, Andris first developed these skills working in commercial litigation for 5 years at King & Wood Mallesons and 5 years at Gilbert+Tobin, as well as working as a prosecutor for the Commonwealth DPP for 3 years in complex corporations, terrorism and drug matters.  He also worked on a number of Royal Commissions, assisting both the Commission (in the Northern Territory Royal Commission into Child Detention) and also acting for clients who were investigated by Royal Commissions (the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption, and the Banking Royal Commission).

At the same time, he also enjoys regularly appearing unled in Local Court, District Court and Supreme Court matters, and has developed his advocacy skills and working knowledge of the criminal jurisdiction through high-volume Legal Aid matters across courts in all regions of Sydney. His practice also includes institutional abuse work, which he has built on following his work in the Royal Commission.

In acting in both small and large matters, Andris has the philosophy that all matters, adequately prepared, can and should be distilled to their main points, as simply and effectively as possible.
